Why Moshe was Exceedingly Humble - Tiferes Shlomo
Behaalosecha
Tosfos explains that there is a difference in usage of the word אדם and האדם, both meaning man. אדם refers to the Jewish people and the side of Holiness. The word האדם includes idolaters.
The primary mission of Tzadikim in this world is “to prune the thorns from the vineyard”; to remove the forces of impurity and negativity in order for the name of Hashem to be manifest within the world. As long as the forces of impurity and those who go against the will of Hashem are still present in the world, the glory of Hashem cannot rest in their presence.
Throughout his life, Moshe was pained. He wished to eradicate the reign of the forces of impurity (referred to as the Sitra Achara – “the other side” of the side of Holiness) and usher in the final redemption when Hashem alone shall rule forever.
However the time was not yet right and Moshe was unable to achieve his wish. Moshe attributed his inability to remove the forces of negativity to himself, that he was somehow deficient and not worthy enough.
This is alluded to in the inner meaning of the verse וְהָאִישׁ מֹשֶׁה ענו מְאֹד מִכֹּל הָאָדָם אֲשֶׁר עַל־פְּנֵי הָאֲדָמָה.
Why was the man Moshe exceedingly humble? Because of מִכֹּל הָאָדָם אֲשֶׁר עַל־פְּנֵי הָאֲדָמָה the fact that the Sitra Achara which is referred to as האדם was still on the face of the earth and had not yet been eradicated.
Ultimately, in the time of Moshiach, the forces of negativity will be forever removed and Hashem alone will rule. Then Moshe will be the Moshiach as alluded to in our Shabbos Amidah with the words ישמח משה, Moshe will rejoice. The word ישמח has the same letters as משיח, Moshiach.
In the continuation of the Shemoneh Esrei we say כי עבד נאמן קראת לו, for You have called him a faithful servant. Then we will know that Moshe served Hashem faithfully, and that the reason Moshiach did not come earlier was not due to any deficiency in Moshe, but simply because the time was not yet right.
